Darkness shrouds Noah James’ past. Drugs, alcohol, abuse—they cloud the few memories he has and threaten to eat away at his future. The only brightness in his life is Caitlyn Hale. She came crashing into his world the day he met with her father, the sports agent who could possibly give him a new start. That day, he left the agent's office with a professional fighting career ahead of him and the image of a hazel-eyed beauty imprinted in his soul.
Rarely does life offer a glimpse of happiness without snatching it away. Just like he's always feared, the monster that haunts him comes roaring back. His entire life shatters, threatening to return him to the darkness he came from. The light-heavyweight champion is about to face the fight of a lifetime. He can only hope to make it through each round without losing the few things he has left.
- Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m nineteen (almost twenty!) and a total nerd; I could tell you
pretty much anything about Harry Potter. I’m a junior in university studying
sociology and Biblical studies. It’s a pretty far cry from the kind of stuff I
write though! I am a complete and total cat lady, no shame, and I’m addicted to
Red Bull. I’m also significantly funnier in person, minus the intense sarcasm
that I have no control over.
- What inspired you to write your first book?
It was actually a weird mix of binge watching the Lord of the Rings
movies and the movie Stardust. I got into this whole phase where I was obsessed with elves, princesses
and fantasy kind of stuff. One day, I basically came up with this storyline
that I wanted to see played out so I decided to write it. Three, maybe four,
drafts later and I came up with Teasing Fate.
- How did you come up with the title of If I Seem Dangerous?
My favorite band, Imagine Dragons, has a song called “Monster.” When
I was in the beginning stages of writing the book, I was listening to the song
on repeat. I was trying to think of a title that fit the book and there was one
line in the song just stuck out to me. It went, “If I seem dangerous, would you
be scared?” It just really made me think of Noah and how he is with Caitlyn.
- Describe your main character in five words.
Okay, that’s tough… Probably, strong, dark, protective, fighter,
passionate.
- What was one of the most surprising things you learned in writing
If I Seem Dangerous?
I don’t think it was something totally new to me, but I guess I was
just surprised to see how people can fight their way out of some really low
lows. Noah might be fictitious, but he was very representative of some people
in my life.
- Have you ever done anything strange or
weird in the name of research?
Let’s just say that I am
now a part of multiple pregnancy websites and my search history makes it look
like I’m planning a murder.
- How long does it take you to write a book?
Good question. If I have time, not long at all. A month or two. If
I’m working or in school it takes significantly longer, maybe even a full year.
- Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Okay, one book I’m currently writing is really steamy; it’s a
spin-off of one of my other novels. The main character shows and rides horses
competitively and ends up falling in lust with her riding instructor. Things
get hot and heavy for most of the novel.
- What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
Non-existent. Okay, that’s not true but it feels like it. I try and
set aside time for writing, but that doesn’t always happen. It basically turns
into me just writing whenever I have time, between classes, in class (don’t
tell), during meals. I just jot stuff down as much as possible.
- Do you have any writing rituals?
I pull out the lovely iPad and turn on something to have playing in
the background, usually one of the Real Housewives TV shows or Project runway,
get something to drink (Red Bull!!!) and cuddle with a blanket then I’m set!
- What book are you reading now?
Shiver by Maggie Steifvater. She’s one of my favorite authors.
- Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your
readers?
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love all of you brilliant people
and your support means the world. I was so terrified of sharing my writing for
so long, but having such amazing readers has made every second worth it. Thanks
for giving me the courage to keep writing.
Random Questions:
- What’s in your fridge right now?
Water. That’s it. I’m a poor college student.
- What song do you sing at the top of your voice every time you
hear it?
Ooooh… Easy. It’s Time by Imagine Dragons. Hands down my favorite
song ever. I’ve even got some of the lyrics tattooed on my ribs.
- Other than writing, what special or unusual talent(s) do you
have?
I’m rather boring really… I’ve got two horses that I jump, which is
kind of special and I’ve got a black belt in karate so that’s kind of cool too.
- Where did you last go on holiday?
Carmel-by-the-sea! It’s this small beach about two hours away from
my house that my mom and I have gone to since I was a baby. We usually go there
when we need an escape.
- If feral aliens attacked your house and they were zapping your home
with their Über super bombs, what five items
would you save?
Can we count my cats and dogs as one item? I’m going to. So, cats,
dogs, my laptop probably, phone and my mom for sure. Well, those are the things
I would want with me. It would probably be pretty hard to carry them all!
- If someone
wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?
The
Cat Lady. ‘nough said.
